Rare Early Medieval Slavic Boat Burial Found in Poland

Among the early medieval Slavs, burying someone in a boat almost never happened. Almost, because a team in eastern Poland just found one.
Archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences uncovered the boat burial at Chodlik, in the Lublin region. The institute works there with support from donors and the Karczmiska municipality, which provides the research station building.
Why this burial stands out
According to the report, boat burials from this period are extremely rare among the Slavs. Known examples concentrate around the Baltic region, particularly Western Pomerania. Chodlik sits in eastern Poland, a long way from that area. The report mentions one comparable find, at Myszecin.
What the team is doing now
The team is collecting sediment from the whole feature for flotation, which recovers small plant remains and charcoal. They are also documenting the burial in detail and building several dozen 3D models, with a full 3D reconstruction planned. Radiocarbon dating, tree-ring examination and anthropological analysis will follow.
The early report gives only the label early medieval. It does not state a date, describe the boat or its condition, list grave goods, or say whether a body survived. The researchers say a detailed interpretation will come after the analyses finish, so treat any bigger claims as premature.
