The Roman Pool at Tralleis That 5,000 People Used in a Day

The spring water came from mountains north of the city. It travelled approximately 56 kilometres through an aqueduct system before arriving at a pool 37 metres long and 12 metres wide, built to hold around 300 people at once. Drainage channels could empty that pool rapidly once the water became dirty, allowing the basin to be cleaned and refilled. This was not an accident of engineering. It was Roman public infrastructure at full scale, designed to serve a city where the bath complex alone could receive between 3,000 and 5,000 people in a single day.
Archaeologists working at Tralleis, the ancient city near modern Aydın in western Turkey, have now fully uncovered this swimming pool after removing the remaining deposits from its basin. The complete plan, water infrastructure, and relationship with the surrounding complex are now visible for the first time in two millennia. The excavation is directed by Professor Murat Çekilmez of Aydın Adnan Menderes University, under Turkey’s Heritage for the Future programme.
What the Pool Was
In Roman bath architecture, the large cold-water swimming basin was known as a natatio. It differed from the smaller plunge baths that appeared elsewhere in a bath complex. A natatio was meant for swimming and cooling, usually positioned in the open air rather than enclosed beneath a roof, and scaled to allow genuine exercise rather than simply a brief immersion.
The Tralleis pool sits in roughly the central section of a bath-gymnasium complex covering close to 40,000 square metres on a plateau overlooking the Büyük Menderes Valley. At 37 metres long, 12 metres wide, and approximately 1.5 metres deep, it is substantially larger than comparable cold-water pools documented at other ancient cities in the region. Çekilmez has described it as Olympic in scale for antiquity, not because it matches the dimensions of a modern Olympic pool, which measures 50 metres by 25 metres, but because its size was exceptional relative to what ancient cities in western Anatolia typically built. The term reflects ambition, not a standard.
The Gymnasium Connection
The pool did not stand alone. It was part of a gymnasium complex, and in the Greek and Roman world the gymnasium was far more than an exercise facility. It was an institution. Young men trained there athletically, received intellectual education within its colonnaded spaces, and developed the social connections and skills that would carry them through civic life. Physical training in the gymnasium was tied directly to civic identity, and the best performers could go on to represent their city in athletic competitions held across the ancient world.
At Tralleis, the proximity of the pool to the gymnasium indicates that swimming formed part of this broader programme of physical education. The bath-gymnasium complex combined exercise, bathing, and social interaction inside a single architectural programme of considerable ambition. Çekilmez estimates that between 3,000 and 5,000 people may have passed through the complex on a busy day. That figure is not the number of people swimming at once. It is the total daily movement through a building that served as one of Tralleis’ primary public spaces.
Water From the Mountains, 56 Kilometres Away
Supplying a pool of this size with consistently fresh water required engineering on a matching scale. Spring water was carried to Tralleis from the mountains north of the city through a system running approximately 56 kilometres. The aqueduct infrastructure needed to move water across that distance and deliver it at usable pressure to a specific point within a large bath complex represented a substantial investment in both engineering expertise and civic resources.
The drainage system was equally considered. Channels designed for rapid emptying allowed the pool to be cleared of dirty water, cleaned, and refilled without significant delay. The basin appears to have remained open to the sky rather than enclosed beneath a roof, which would have made it particularly suitable for the hot summers of western Anatolia and ensured that natural light and air reached the water. The combination of long-distance supply, rapid drainage, and open-air design produced a facility that could serve large numbers of people regularly and remain hygienic enough to sustain that use over decades.
Tralleis: A City Built for Prosperity
Tralleis had the resources to build and maintain a facility of this scale because it was one of the wealthier cities of Roman western Anatolia. The city stands on the slopes of the Kestane Mountains above the fertile Büyük Menderes Valley, a position that placed it on important regional communication and trade routes. Ancient sources associated its foundation with Thracian settlers and colonists from Argos in Greece, though the city developed over many distinct phases.
Alexander the Great captured Tralleis in 334 BCE during his campaign through western Anatolia. After Alexander’s death, the city passed between the kingdoms that divided his empire, developing through the Hellenistic period before coming fully into the Roman sphere. Under Roman rule it prospered, becoming known particularly for sculpture. Its gymnasia, temples, agora, theatre, and stadium made it a city whose public architecture matched its economic significance.
The bath-gymnasium complex had earlier origins but was severely damaged by a major earthquake in 26 BCE. Its restoration was supported by the Emperor Augustus, and Tralleis was temporarily renamed Caesarea in acknowledgement of that imperial patronage. The pool, though fully uncovered only now, belongs to the complex that was rebuilt and expanded in the period following Augustus’s intervention.
What Survives Above Ground
The most visible surviving structure at Tralleis today is a group of three arches known locally as Üçgözler, meaning Three Eyes, which formed part of the same bath-gymnasium complex. Rising above the modern landscape near Aydın, the arches have stood for two millennia as a reminder that a major ancient city once occupied this plateau. Other remains identified across the site include a marble-paved street, an agora, a theatre, a stadium, temples, residential buildings, churches, and necropolises.
The fully uncovered pool now adds a new element to that picture. Where the arches show the monumental ambition of Tralleis’ public architecture from the outside, the pool reveals what daily civic life looked like from the inside, the actual space where residents swam, athletes trained, and the rhythms of Roman urban existence played out across a 40,000-square-metre complex built to receive thousands of people every day.
What Comes Next
Conservation and restoration work is ongoing. Once that process is complete, the excavation team plans to refill the ancient basin with water, allowing visitors to experience the pool closer to its original appearance and to better understand the scale of public life it was designed to support.
A swimming pool 37 metres long, fed by spring water from 56 kilometres away, drained and cleaned and refilled as needed, open to the Anatolian sky. Three thousand years after the aqueduct was laid and 2,000 years after the pool was filled for the first time, the infrastructure that made it possible is finally fully visible. What it describes is a city that did not merely tolerate public life. It engineered it.
