3 Body Problem: Is This Sci-Fi Our Future Technology?

Today I completed watching this series named 3 Body Problem. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must!
The story revolves around two civilizations: one from a planet 4.5 light-years away and ours. The series is filled with science fiction concepts inspired by real-life science. In this blog, we’ll delve into some of these fascinating concepts.

The Three-Body Problem: A Chaotic Celestial Dance

The title of the series itself refers to a complex problem in celestial mechanics. Imagine trying to predict the precise movements of three dancers interacting with each other. That’s essentially the three-body problem, except the dancers are celestial bodies like stars or planets, and the interaction is gravity. Unlike two-body systems, which can be mathematically solved, three-body systems become increasingly unpredictable over time. This scientific concept plays a significant role in the story’s narrative, reflecting the chaotic nature of the Trisolaran civilization’s home planet.

Quantum Entanglement: Spooky Action at a Distance

The series also explores the mind-bending concept of quantum entanglement. Imagine two coins that are always flipped the same way, no matter how far apart they are. That’s a simplified analogy for entangled particles. In quantum mechanics, entangled particles are linked in a way that defies classical physics. When entangled, these particles share a single quantum state, meaning a measurement on one particle instantaneously affects the other, regardless of the distance separating them. This phenomenon, often referred to as “spooky action at a distance,” has been experimentally verified https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/qt-entangle/ and could potentially revolutionize communication and data transfer in the future, as the series suggests.

Cryogenic Dreams: The Promise of Suspended Life

The series also touches upon the controversial topic of cryogenic freezing. This technology involves preserving people at ultra-low temperatures after legal death, with the hope of reviving them in the future when medical advancements allow for it. While cryonics is still in its early stages, it has captured the imagination of many who believe it could be a key to cheating death. Organizations like the Cryonics Institute https://cryonics.org/ are working on perfecting this process, but there are many scientific and ethical hurdles to overcome before it becomes a mainstream practice.

Nuclear Explosion Propulsion: A Powerful but Perilous Idea

Finally, the series explores the concept of nuclear explosion propulsion for spaceships. This method would use the immense energy released from controlled nuclear detonations to propel spacecraft at incredible speeds. Imagine setting off a firecracker behind a rocket for a much bigger boost!  While it offers the potential for much faster interstellar travel, the immense dangers associated with nuclear technology, along with the challenges of containing such explosions in space, make it a highly controversial idea.

These are just some of the real-world science concepts that inspired the science fiction in the 3 Body Problem series. If you’re interested in learning more about these intriguing ideas, this series is a great starting point!
