LiDAR Uncovers a Hidden Inca Road That May Lead to a Sacred Peak

On the far side of the river from Machu Picchu’s famous stone terraces, hidden beneath tropical forest that has kept it invisible for centuries, archaeologists have found a network of Inca roads nobody knew existed, including one that may have led straight toward a sacred mountain.
A Road System Hidden in Plain Sight
During archaeological work carried out within the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Park, researchers discovered previously unknown roads dating to the Inca period. The University of Warsaw’s Center for Andean Studies, working with its partner institution Wrocław University of Science and Technology, made a significant contribution to the find, in cooperation with Peru’s Directorate of Culture in Cusco.
Fieldwork carried out by the Polish-Peruvian team in late July and early August 2026 identified more than 2.5 kilometers of pre-Columbian roads that had remained completely unknown, hidden beneath dense tropical forest. The roads lead to platforms and terraces near the so-called Mandor Wall, or Muralla de Mandor, directly across the Urubamba Valley from the famous Machu Picchu complex itself.
A Discovery That Flips the Map Around
“This discovery complements and significantly revises hypotheses regarding the functioning of the entire complex,” said Prof. Mariusz Ziółkowski, director of the Center for Andean Studies at the University of Warsaw. “Within Machu Picchu National Park, there are over 60 archaeological sites linked by a network of roads. These sites served various satellite functions in relation to the main complex, known as Llaqta de Machu Picchu. They are situated mainly on the left bank of the river, and it seemed that this was where the Incas had concentrated their urban planning efforts. The roads we have discovered alter this picture, it turns out that the other side of the river also underwent significant cultural transformations during the Inca period.”
That shift matters because Machu Picchu has traditionally been understood as anchored almost entirely to one side of the Urubamba River. Finding a substantial, previously undocumented road network on the opposite bank suggests the Incas invested considerably more effort in this part of the landscape than researchers had assumed.
A Wall That May Have Been Something Else Entirely
The most intriguing new interpretation concerns the Mandor Wall itself. Sections of the structure reach two to three meters in height, and its appearance had previously encouraged the idea that it may have served as a barrier, perhaps defining or protecting territory around Machu Picchu.
Nino del Solar Velarde, head of archaeological research coordination at Machu Picchu for the Cusco Directorate of Culture, who supervised the fieldwork, told Peru’s Andina news agency that the archaeological evidence identified so far doesn’t clearly point to a conflict that would explain building a defensive wall. Instead, the route follows the natural geography of the mountain, with its alignment pointing toward Yanantin, one of the peaks incorporated into the sacred landscape surrounding Machu Picchu. “The direction goes toward an elevated peak” on the same axis as Yanantin, del Solar said, an alignment that has led researchers to consider a ceremonial rather than defensive interpretation.
In Andean cosmology, mountains were never simply landmarks. Prominent peaks, known as apus, were understood as sacred entities bound up in relationships involving communities, water, fertility, and protection. If the Mandor route really was oriented deliberately toward Yanantin, its position could help researchers understand how movement through this landscape carried religious as well as practical meaning for the people who built it.
Machu Picchu Was Never Just One Site
The discovery reinforces a broader shift already underway in how archaeologists understand Machu Picchu. The famous stone settlement was never an isolated complex surrounded by untouched wilderness. Roads connected it to terraces, satellite settlements, agricultural zones, and other locations spread across the surrounding mountains.
Del Solar estimates the wider landscape includes more than 300 kilometers of roads linking Machu Picchu to associated sites. The newly identified Mandor route appears to continue south and may eventually connect with archaeological structures researchers had already documented elsewhere in the area, adding one more thread to an already extensive web of Inca infrastructure.
How the Roads Were Actually Found
LiDAR, a remote-sensing technology that maps terrain by measuring how laser pulses bounce off the ground, made the discovery possible. Because the pulses can be filtered to strip out vegetation from the resulting data, LiDAR is uniquely suited to revealing subtle features like roads, terraces, and building foundations that dense tropical forest would otherwise hide completely from view.
This year’s research and documentation was carried out by a team that included archaeologist Dr. Jan Kłaput of the University of Warsaw’s Center for Andean Studies, Dr. Bartłomiej Ćmielewski of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, who supervised the drone-based LiDAR scanning, Dr. Paweł Dąbek of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, and Peruvian archaeologist Jeff Rocky Contreras Soto of Apu Space. Archaeologists have used LiDAR around Machu Picchu before, including in the Mandor area specifically, but this year’s survey is significant because it exposed a considerably more extensive road system than earlier work had found, and gave researchers specific new targets for direct excavation.
What Comes Next
For now, the evidence comes primarily from remote sensing and archaeological reconnaissance rather than excavation. Discussions are underway between the University of Warsaw and the Dirección Desconcentrada de Cultura, the local branch of Peru’s Ministry of Culture, on a framework for continued research collaboration over the next several years.
“In next year’s campaign, our primary goal is to complete the remote-sensing survey. Based on this, we plan to carry out fieldwork, involving at least the partial excavation of these roads and associated structures,” Ziółkowski said. He added that both the Polish and Peruvian teams are deliberately withholding the exact location of the finds for now, citing concerns about damage from amateur treasure hunters.
Peru’s Minister of Culture, Alberto Beingolea Delgado, appointed at the end of July 2026, announced the ministry’s support for further research into the discovery during an inspection visit to Machu Picchu on August 11. The collaboration between the University of Warsaw’s Center for Andean Studies, the Regional Directorate of Culture in Cusco, and the Machu Picchu National Archaeological Sanctuary stretches back to 2008, and this latest find adds a substantial new chapter to that long-running partnership. Whether the road concealed beneath the forest was built simply to move people across the mountains, or to lead them deliberately toward a peak the Inca considered sacred, is a question researchers now hope direct excavation can finally help answer.
